Cinema Simulacra”

The Regulars

For Fil, his average workday begins with a much-needed sleep-in. The film school graduate turned movie theatre employee earns his rent by working at London’s beloved Prince Charles Cinema. A renowned historical movie theatre cherished by British cinephiles, Fil treats his unglamorous profession just like any other minimum wage occupation. The staff at the movie theatre share a collective disdain against their patrons, often finding themselves in circuitous conflicts that don’t seem to have any end. This is merely the reality of working in customer service, a tiresome job that unites the British cinema-going culture together. Within the mundanity of a work shift, Fil finds humour and catharsis amongst his unenthusiastic co-workers.

In The Regulars, debut director Fil Freitas pays direct homage to the hangout sub-genre. Heavily influenced by Kevin Smith’s Clerks and the early work of Richard Linklater, The Regulars offers an empathetic slacker portrait of a thankless occupation. Adapted from Freitas’ own experiences working at the Prince Charles Cinema, the film presents its frequently funny saga of miscellaneous misadventures through the quotidian lives of its ordinary characters. Lensed by first-time cinematographer Ben Rolph in stunning black & white, The Regulars vicariously captures the behind-the-scenes working rituals behind one of Britain's most-renowned cinema houses. - David Cuevas
