“Cinema Simulacra”
At his Bressonian desk, an eccentric Romanian film director explains his pursuits to concoct a profitable feature for the masses through the usage of generative artificial intelligence. With his handy tablet, the talentless & tasteless protagonist utilises generative AI to concoct a series of fifteen vignettes about Dracula. In hopes of producing a commercial project from his nonsensical prompts, the life and legacy of Vlad the Impaler are repurposed through different generative tales. In search of artistic vindication, the audience bears witness to multiple storylines, including but not limited to an adaptation of Romania’s first-ever vampiric novella, zombies, labour strikes, vulgar folktales, and a generative recreation of an infamous scene from Bram Stoker's Dracula.
In Radu Jude’s sardonic three-hour takedown of artificial intelligence, the Romanian iconoclast behind the Golden Bear-winning Bad Luck Banging or Looney Porn returns with an unhinged vision of artistic bankruptcy. Artificial Intelligence is used to exorcise its vampiric mythology, comparing the soulless blood-sucking form of generative technology with the vacuous spirit of the infamous count. In the process, Jude’s latest genre-bending feature ruminates on the turbulent future of cinema through the mythologisation of Count Dracula. Beyond its onslaught of cinematic vulgarities, Jude’s interpretation of the fanged figure unveils poignant truths about the state of cinema, media literacy, and the future of the medium. At its core, Jude’s Dracula is a hilarious, unforgettable, and unapologetically crass indictment of generative artificial intelligence. - David Cuevas
