MESSY LEGENDS

Kelly Kay Hurcomb and James Watts| Canada | 2026 | 102 min

To call Kelly Kay Hurcomb and James Watts' MESSY LEGENDS a modern-day DIY ODYSSEY feels only fitting: an adventure told through the turmoil, melancholy, and fleeting possibilities during our collective awakening to adulthood. The film, titled after the duo’s short film of the same name, follows a group of millennials navigating a sloppy, jumbled night in Montreal. Each of the characters encounters their own hurdles, misadventures, and disappointments along the way. Through fast-paced editing that mirrors the fragmentation and frenzy of its characters’ auras, the film combines a distinctive sense of humour and a banger original soundtrack by VOYEURISM for maximalist effect.

MESSY LEGENDS sets a tone that is simultaneously hopeful and hopeless. It's a feeling that rings true to the struggles of our generation, offering sharp social commentary on rising grind culture and the housing crisis; all set against the backdrop of Montreal's vibrant nightlife. There's something beautiful and terrifying about entering adulthood, heading into the night with no expectations, yet wanting it all; forever searching for a feeling that fills a void that never quite closes.- Kassy Gascho
