IMAGINAL DISK

In a retro-futurist world, a young singer becomes enchanted by the inauguration of a euphoric invention. Entitled the “Imaginal Disk”, the woman is mesmerised by the device’s projectile visions. Transporting users to new colourful dimensions, the impressionable singer enters a symphonic vaporwave daydream that teeters into a waking nightmare. Forced to confront her own self-image, the rhyme and reason of her reality blur within the fractured reclamation of her own identity. 

After directing music videos for My Morning Jacket and Maya Hawke, Amanda Kramer returns to the world of audio-visual stimulation with her otherworldly pop masterwork “Imaginal Disk”. Two years after the release of the eponymous album of the same name, Kramer’s rhythmic adaptation of Magdalena Bay’s toe-tapping music beautifully interprets their powerful ballads into cinematic form. Recalling the kaleidoscopic aesthetics of Nobuhiko Obayashi and the Teletubbies, this rare once-in-a-lifetime screening of Kramer’s idiosyncratic visual album is an unmissable theatrical experience. - David Cuevas
