“Hit the Road!”
The Last One for the Road
Francesco Sossai | Italy, Germany | 2025 | 98 min
Somewhere in Veneto, Carlobianchi and Doriano hit the road without a destination in mind. For the two fifty-something Italian misfits, casual law-evasion is all part of their ceremonious routine. Hitting the road without a care in the world, the two alcoholic criminals run into Guilio, an introverted architecture student whose reserved demeanour catches the attention of the memorable scoundrels. Together, through pure happenstance, the middle-aged drunkards invite Guilio on a transformative journey across the picturesque Venetian plains. As the three men reflect upon their lives and financial losses, the unlikely group begin to bond over their philosophies and desires over the span of their unconventional voyage.
Directly inspired by the Commedia all'italiana, a bygone sub-genre that brought Italian classics such as Il Sorpasso into the international limelight, Francesco Sossai’s unpredictable road-movie resuscitates the conventions of classic Italian comedies with a distinct idiosyncratic vision. The Last One for The Road moves at a drunken rhythm. The constant on-screen inebriation directly reflects upon the film’s winding structure. As the onscreen drunks learn to live their lives to the fullest, Carlobianchi and Doriano’s lackadaisical mantras promote a compassionate lesson about acceptance and the process of letting go of materialistic prospects. The Last One for the Road is a beautiful ode to the unlikely friends we meet on the great road of life. - David Cuevas - David Cuevas
