Resurrection

In a world where humanity has achieved immortality by sacrificing their ability to dream, creatures known as Fantasmers live on the margins of their society for their rare dreaming capabilities. Curious about the Fantasmer's somnolent intelligence, a mysterious woman (portrayed by Taiwanese superstar Shu Qi) tracks down one of the lonely creatures. Through her labyrinthine world, she finds one of the exiled beasts. As the woman confronts the Fantasmer, she is lured into a self-referential fantasia spanning over 100 years of cinema history. The Fantasmer's magnificent dreams embody the beauty, mystery, and mythology of cinema.

Infusing references to renegade art movements and iconic classics such as The Lady From Shanghai and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Bi Gan’s ambitious third feature is an uncompromising work of cinema. Akin to the hazy kaleidoscopic scope of Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams, Resurrection contemplates on the lifeblood of its self-referential medium through the unpredictable dreamscapes. Bi Gan’s latest reverie is an audacious vision that employs a unique synesthetic structure to each of the pensive chapters. Through its subversion of genres, Resurrection excels in its maximalist surrealism. Accompanied by an ambient score from Anthony Gonzalez (M83), Bi Gan’s latest opus ditches traditional narrative linearity in exchange for a transcendental cinematic experience. - David Cuevas
