Curious about the Fantasmer's somnolent intelligence, a mysterious woman (portrayed by Taiwanese superstar Shu Qi) tracks down one of the lonely creatures. Through her labyrinthine world, she finds one of the exiled beasts. As the woman confronts the Fantasmer, she is lured into a self-referential fantasia spanning over 100 years of cinema history.
