The Piano Accident
Quentin Dupieux | France | 2025 | 92m
Social media influencer Magalie is in big trouble. Fleeing to her remote chalet in the frost-bitten mountains after a freak accident, the renegade trendsetter occupies her isolated estate with her subservient personal assistant. When a journalist comes knocking at her door, blackmailing the mean-spirited celebrity in exchange for an interview exclusive, Magalie is forced to confront her turbulent upbringing and her empire of senseless video slop. What follows is a tragic-comic satire on the extremities of internet sensationalism, as Magalie’s entire career comes crashing down with her insatiable personality.
In Quentin Dupieux’s latest satire, the bluntness of The Piano Accident’s absurdist social-media allegory takes centre stage. Amplifying the dissonance that continuously populates our algorithmic timelines, Adèle Exarchopoulos’ fully committed turn as the film’s hostile social-media star perfectly embodies her character’s complete lack of a moral consciousness. Her iconic performance in The Piano Accident is among her most memorable roles to date. As a character study on our collective dependency on internet recognition, The Piano Accident offers a blunt, albeit deeply funny commentary on social apathy. Akin to his cult-hit Deerskin, Dupieux examines yet another story of obsession through a delightfully droll contemporary lens. - David Cuevas
